I believe ..
.. today's mindlessness has come about from instant chat/messaging due to causing (forcing?) people to no longer think about what it is they are writing (more often than not). Therefore, by writing lots of short messages, people become complaisant as a confident writer. They look for shortcuts on ways to say more using less characters, so they shrten wrds and it becomes habit. This has an impact on their ability to write professionally and this is evident in communication and correspondence both received persoanlly and witness having been sent.
People used to write long letters, by hand, sometimes multiple times before they sent their messages. Sure, there's email, however that is available on just about every device these days - with SMS notifications becomming more common.

All that people need to do to avoid this is practice by writing messages with full words instead of using made-up abbreviations, and make them long messages sent occasionally .. not short messages sent every heartbeat.
These are my thoughts.
